Biting my way through New York City, USA [part 3]

And the photos keep coming from the Big Apple – makes sense as we spent a majority of our time there. Having said that, you can never have enough time in New York, there is just so much to see and do. And eat! :)

Sportivo Pizzeria and Cafe, West Lakes

sportivo cafe

Pizza night in West Lakes at Sportivo Pizzeria and Cafe before catching a late night movie session to see Oblivion (and if you’re wondering, don’t watch it! :/ ).

We’re here for their well known traditional thin based wood oven pizzas but after browsing through the menu, I must admit their mains tickled my taste buds too. To accompany our pizza, we a plate of mussels to start things off.

sportivo cafe
Cozze alglio olio: whole Port Lincon mussels steamed with garlic, olive oil, parsley and tomato; $13.50

We quickly rummaged through our bowl of mussels and discarded all the empty shells in the spare bowl provided as some of the meat had fallen out. We paired each piece with a mouthful of toasted bread and savoured it; hints of garlic, parsley and tomato shine through providing a light freshness before we tackled our pizza which arrived straight after our mussels did. By the time we started on our pizza, it wasn’t as hot as we were hoping but what can you do? (PS. the table was overcrowded with all our food coming out at once so maybe request for food to come one after the other or snag a larger table!)

Half and half 12″ pizza
Zucca: red sauce, mozzarella, spinach, sun-dried tomatoes, capsicums, artichokes, pumpkin and fetta
Croce d’oro: red sauce, mozzarella, combination of Italian sausages, wood-oven mushrooms and caramelised onion

Toppings a plenty with good flavours and the pizza crust thin however the base was not crispy but rather soft and soggy. The zucca caught my attention by the mention of pumpkin and fetta (YUM!) whilst the stranger opted for the carnivore option of croce d’oro with a variety of Italian sausages and sweet caramelised onions. Surprisingly we managed to smash the pizza evenly, 50/50. Now that’s a lot of pizza slices for me! >.< That won’t be happening anytime soon again! :P

La Trattoria

La Trattoria
Garlic bread; $4.00
Andy’s Marinara Fresh Seafood gourmet pizza: the winner of “Best Gourmet Pizza” competition; $22.00 (small)

Alla panna sauce: ham, cream and mushrooms; $14.00 entree size
Penne Al Gamberi and Rucola: short pasta with fresh large prawns, rocket leaves and Napoletana sauce; $22.00 entree size

I’m always a bit skeptical ordering something from a menu with an achievement attached to it, remember the “Best pub burger in SA 2011″ at the Hilton Hotel: Fedora’s Casual? That said, I gave the famous award winning pizza a go at La Trattoria and my golly gosh… IT WAS SO YUMMY! A thin crispy base with a generous amount of seafood toppings (prawns, scallops, squid), all plump and juicy with a rich and flavourful tomato base and some melted cheese. It’s safe to say, I can see why they won the award. The ladies on the table thoroughly enjoyed their pastas as well as commenting on how tasty my pizza was. The pastas were both lovely with loads of flavour with the penne al gamberi and rucola winning out in my books. Only cause I’m not a huge fan of cream based pastas as I find them too incredibly rich and heavy.
