Fork on the Road at The Depot

Finally made it to a Fork on the Road event – and a double whammy at that! Lunch and dinner FOTR sessions a few weeks back was held at the new and awesomely funky fringe venue, The Depot in between Franklin Street and Grote Street.

I thought I’d give Phat Buddha a try after being somewhat intrigued with their ‘Cambodian Rolls’.

Phat Buddha – Cambodian rolls, beef lemongrass roll; $8.50

You know what? These ‘Cambodian rolls’ are pretty much replicas of the Vietnamese meat rolls that I’ve grown up with and absolutely love, but they’re not the same! The rolls for one, are a lot more expensive, they weren’t generous with the filling so the roll was more or less… ‘flat’ and the flavours weren’t the same. The shredded carrot weren’t the pickle kind and it was missing that lovely and scrumptious aioli and pate that are traditionally lathered in meat rolls. So what says I? Save yourself a few dollars and make the extra drive down the Western suburbs and pick up one of the rolls from Tay Do or Nhu Lan instead – seriously, so much better!

Chimichurri Grill’s Chimi steak: tender scotch fillet steak, provolone cheese, rocket and our signature chimichurri sauce served on a fresh ciabatta roll with chips and Chimi mayo dipping sauce; $12.90 + $1.00

The FOTR dinner session involved a small team of us dispersed inside The Depot ordering a little bit of everything. Burgers from Burger Theory, Hot Dogs from America’s Top Dog, a sampler plate from Sneaky Pickle (although they ran out of deep fried pickles when we ordered the sampler!), tacos from Taco Cat and a variety of salads from Let Them Eat. Your choice of salads and a fritter or pie for $14.00. We had carrot and quinoa with toasted seeds, spiced chickpeas with roasted capsicum and Middle Eastern cracked wheat salad with pomegranate with a sweet corn and feta fritter. The standouts? The carrot and quinoa with toasted seeds and sweet corn and feta fritter – oh so tasty! Can’t wait to drop into Let Them Eat and order these again when I’m on Elizabeth Street wanting a creme brulee tart or two from Red Door Bakery.

And to round off the night, we ordered some sweet sugary goodness. Loukamades from YiaYia’s and the different kinds of churros from ChurrOz; traditional: churros rolled in cinnamon sugar and icing sugar, tempting: churros drizzled with dulce de leche (caramel) and chocolate sauce. The preference? Stick with the traditional concoction – simple is best!

News on the next FOTR event isn’t out yet but you can check The Depot to see what trucks are out and on what day! ;)

Hunted the truck down was an ease with frequent updates on their Facebook and twitter so get in on the ‘liking’ and ‘following’ if you’re after a pickle or two. ;)

Reuben sandwich; $9.00

The reuben sandwich was well toasted with generous fillings of corned beef and sauerkraut with cheese served with pot crisps, pickles and thousand island! So good with the crunchy toast, soft and flavourful filling with a bonus of crunch from the side of crisps and sweet tang from the pickles. Oozes of flavour and textures with every mouthful.

Texas pulled pork with slaw in bun with BBQ corn and b/b pickles; $9.00

The Texas pulled pork bun was the favourite for the day. Super tender, melt in the mouth pork in a sweet smokey sauce with a crunchy fresh slaw to cut through it, all enclosed between two soft buns that’s lightly toasted. And for the sides? Sweet BBQ corn and a side of pickles. Bliss!

Fried pickles with mayo; $5.00

You can’t hunt down the truck without getting a serve of fried pickles with mayo! Non greasy finger food at its best, you can almost call it healthy with the pickle being the main ingredient. ;) Not only do you get a crunch from the light crispy batter on the outside, but you get another snap juicy crunch from the pickle stick on the inside.
